About Me

Hi.  My name is Rich Sobel, I’m a “boomer” and proud of it.   I love to share my thoughts and photographs and I like to get out and do stuff.  I walk, hike, bike, run, climb, scramble, and just generally get around, or ramble.

I’m quite dedicated to exploring my local area – don’t often go far away – plenty enough right here in Southwest British Columbia.  I like how that gives me a better sense of place and home.  And yes, I’m home wherever I am on planet earth but some places are dearer to my heart than others!

I  have been a practicing Zen Buddhist for over 30 years now. Currently, I am a member of the Mountain Rain Zen Community, a satellite of the Everyday Zen Foundation, currently led by teacher Norman Zoketsu Fischer.

I’ve been doing photography as a hobby ever since my high school days and only in the past few years have I moved into selling photos.  I currently have portfolios on 2 stock sites, RooM-the agency and Photographer’s Direct.  I recently decided to put together some photo galleries here on my WordPress site so please check them out.  All the photos in my galleries here are for sale.  Just contact me for details and pricing.

I post some of my best photos on Flickr, and have for years.  I created a flickr feed on my sidebar so you can see the latest images I post there, too.

I hold Tai Chi classes  at the Creekside Recreation and Community Centre in the former Athlete’s Olympic Village on False Creek.  If you’re in Vancouver and want to stop in for a class or just to say hello, please do!

As a musician I play fiddle, mandolin, guitar, djembe and whatever else moves me in the moment and have composed tunes for many years. I’m in the process of creating a music section on this site so look for it in the near future.  You can find some of my original compositions on my Free-scores site.

You can check out the band I play with, The Sybaritic String Band for more info about where and when to come dance or listen to me play.  And I have a CD I produced a few years back.  It’s still for sale!

Every now and then, I indulge in a political rant – just another kind of rambling.  Get that from my Dad, an avid political rabble rouser from the get-go.

I hope you enjoy my rambles.

Please do comment and feel free to reblog if something strikes a chord.

Posts will be sporadic.  Sometimes a couple in a day, and then nothing for a couple of weeks or months.  That’s just the way my life is these days.

Enjoy.

  1. Hey Rich, congratulations on winning last week’s Odds & Ends! I was hoping to email you, but I can’t seem to find this information here. On my contact page, you can send me an email for your shipping info, and your prize will be well on its way this week. Great site by the way! It’s funny, I also live in BC, dabble in martial arts and buddhism myself. It seems we have quite a bit in common! Thanks for visiting the Oaken Reed!
